Description
Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2020 (bio)Christoph Raffelt: The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a hint of hops, and wax is also evident on the palate. The Pinot Gris has a long finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The Heimbourg single vineyard lies on a hill detached from the Vosges Mountains in the east of the Grand Cru Brand in Turckheim. This small, 7-hectare vineyard was largely abandoned after the Second World War because its steep slopes (over 50% in places) were very difficult to cultivate and manage. The soils are shallow, and the Oligocene bedrock is exposed in some places. It’s not uncommon for the plow to encounter impressive blocks of calcareous sandstone conglomerate. Heimbourg’s vineyard faces southwest to west, exposing the grapes to cooler north winds. Heimbourg is not a sunny vineyard, which often explains why the wines have an expressive aromatic profile and beautiful acidity. My father, Léonard Humbrecht, began acquiring the first parcels of land at Heimbourg in 1978 and quickly recognized the immense qualitative potential of this slope. For this reason, the winery has repeatedly acquired large portions of this slope and, at great expense, brought it back into cultivation. Today, the winery owns 4 hectares of vineyards in this location.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Pinot Gris Heimbourg presents interesting aromas that initially, away from the fruit, are reminiscent of green tea, undergrowth, and herbal brew. With sufficient oxygen, inspiring notes of lime, green apple, and grapefruit emerge. A Pinot Gris animated by an inspiring freshness, underpinned by compact minerality.
Palate
Salty and sweet on the first impression; its invigorating acidity blends with juicy fruit, while at the same time revealing a malty impression and a fine tannin structure that stimulates the appetite. The juicy apple fruit caresses the palate; truly the perfect food companion, a wine that loves spice and fruit in dishes and complements them excellently. Very good aging potential! Those who are impatient and would like to open it now are advised to decant it at least one day in advance and to enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
