Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2017 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a hint of hops, and wax is also evident on the palate. The Pinot Gris has a long finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.
Wine Information
Vintage The 2017 vintage will go down in the history of this winery. For Olivier Humbrecht, it is one of the three best vintages since the winery was founded in 1959. However, this time frost and hail limited the average harvest to less than 20 hl/ha. After an early bud break, two cold spells with sub-zero temperatures on April 21 and 22 exposed even more sheltered areas to frost. An unusually icy east wind killed vines in vineyards like the Herrenweg de Turckheim, which had never suffered a frost in the 60 years that Olivier’s father had witnessed. A hailstorm in the Brand vineyard fortunately had no major consequences. Midsummer was hot, August milder, and the harvest began on August 29 with Pinot Gris Roche Roulée, followed by terroirs such as Rotenberg, Heimbourg, Goldert, etc. A light rain on September 2 accelerated ripening. The Rieslings were harvested from September 11 onwards, and the harvest was completed with Rangen, Hengst, and Clos Jebsal on September 26. Only Clos Jebsal showed minor signs of botrytis. Vineyard The small village of Heimbourg (9 ha) lies on a hill east of Turckheim. Its steep slopes run from south to west. The upper part, facing west, is more exposed to the winds and, with its leaner soil, is well suited to Pinot Gris. The soil consists primarily of Oligocene limestone marl, so dense it seems to have been mixed with cement. There is hardly any topsoil, but plenty of iron oxide. The vines were planted between 1986 and 1991. The Pinot Gris in Heimbourg ripens slowly, only shows noble rot late, and thus retains a beautiful acidity in the grapes. Fermentation The wine has 5.3 g/l of residual sugar and 5.2 g of acidity.
Colour
Bright golden yellow
Nose
From the very first moment, the Heimbourg Pinot Gris is a serious, pure Pinot Gris that shows its stony side. The high iron content of the soil is entirely understandable here. The wine is extremely lively, with fruit reminiscent of apples and apple skins, with hints of broom, bay leaves, and flint, the latter associated with reductive aging.
Palate
The juiciness and creaminess on the palate are wonderful. The Heimbourg delivers intense stone fruit and ripe citrus fruit, along with supple tannins and, above all, a vibrant, fresh acidity with a salty minerality. The palate also reveals the combination of apple and apple skin, quince, a touch of hops, and wax. The Pinot Gris has a long finish and remains fresh and charming until the very last second.
