Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl, Vendanges Tardives 2005

Colour

Intense golden yellow with delicate copper reflections.

Nose

The 2005 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl Vendanges Tardives exudes intense sweetness on the nose. It smells of honey, caramelized almonds, dried dates, and orange jam.

Palate

The 2005 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl Vendanges Tardives is opulent and sweet on the palate. This fantastic sweet wine is endowed with intense minerality; it is at the beginning of its development and has many years of aging potential. Clos Windsbuhl is situated on a small, 16-acre ridge, facing south-southeast, with a special microclimate enhanced by the lean limestone soil. In 2005, the grapes achieved perfect ripeness and acidity balance, and just before the harvest, noble rot transformed them into small, rich, sweet berries. The nose already reveals the wine’s full aromatic potential: a combination of honey, apricot, wax, and the classic Windsbuhl minerals. The palate is still closed at this stage (2007), refusing to reveal the enormous sweetness (residual sweetness: 92 g/l). This harmonious Vendage Tardive will develop further in the near future, moving toward the great 2002 or 1994 vintages. A wine with extraordinary aging potential.

Wine Advocate

Score: 95

The 2005 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl Vendange Tardive displays an intense golden apricot color and opens with a rich and intense, very elegant and aromatic bouquet of stewed and baked stone fruits, crushed limestone, tarte Tatin and hints of caramel. Full-bodied, sweet and rich on the palate, with tea tannins structuring the rich fruit carpet and intertwining with stimulating and sustainable salinity, this is a baroque yet vivacious and even playful Pinot Gris from this Muschelkalk clos in Hunawihr. The wine is rich, tight and tensioned and leaves the palate with loads of fruit and stimulating grip. Superb! 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.

Medium gold. Supersweet aromas of tangerine, strawberry and aromatic oils. This compellingly sweet wine comes across as a bit softer than the Clos Jebsal VT because its ripe acidity is more thoroughly integrated today. Wonderfully spherical wine with a distinctly exotic character-and noteworthy freshness from underlying minerality. A tad higher in sugar and lower in alcohol than the Clos Jebsal.
