Nose

The 2014 Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris from Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace starts impressively on the nose. Tarte Tatin and baked quince dominate the picture. But sourdough bread and butter crumble also vie for aromatic supremacy. Candied ginger and candied orange and lemon zest form a second intense level. Turmeric and saffron can be subtly detected. Despite all these loud aromas, however, the wine always appears cool and linear. With increasing oxygen and rising temperature in the glass, additional notes of mango, papaya, and passion fruit emerge. The oriental spice now becomes much more intense. Dates, dried figs, and local dried fruit complement this idea congenially.

Palate

On the palate, it goes straight to the point. The foundation for this wine is a taut framework of considerable acidity, abundant fruit, and plenty of finesse. Clos Windsbuhl presents itself as stony, sparse, and not the slightest bit characterized by sweetness or concentration. The fruit is clearly noticeable and roughly corresponds to the impressions on the nose. But it is imbued with such flow and elegance that the fruit hardly has a chance to build up. A tremendous minerality has an additional cooling effect and provides further contrast to the fruit. It drags on enormously, and the finish seems to be nailed down. The aromas revolve in circles for minutes.

Wine Advocate

Score: 93

From 45-year-old vines on Muschelkalk (shell limestone) in a higher, cooler, south/southeast-facing medium slope, the bright golden colored 2014 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl opens with a beautifully clear, ripe and smoky flavored 2014 bouquet of ripe berries, seed fruits and oranges. Full-bodied and silky on the palate, this is a highly elegant, piquant and salty, but also fruit-intense Pinot with great purity, finesse and tension. The finish is dry and impressively long, structured by fine tannins and a prickling minerality. The 2014 shows a gorgeous definition of ripe and concentrated fruits, and is perfectly balanced and noble in its flow of the palate. Bottled in August with 14% alcohol and seven grams of residual sugar per liter, this is a great Pinot Gris from one of the grape’s greatest terroirs.

Vinous

Score: 94

Bright copper-tinged straw. Perfumed aromas of dried fruits, orange marmalade, honey and spices. Deep and complex, delivering bright juicy apple, toffee, and strawberry flavors that are multilayered and very precise. Tastes off-dry (7 g/L residual sugar and 6.2 g/L total acidity). Very serious, refined Pinot Gris made from 45-year-old vines and extremely low yields (22 hl/ha).
