Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal 2022 (bio)

Wine Information

Olivier Humbrecht: Clos Jebsal was redefined in 1983, when Léonard Humbrecht succeeded in consolidating the various small vineyards on the Jebsal estate in Turckheim. The entire plot is only 1.3 hectares in size and was previously divided among many small producers. Most parts have not been planted since World War II. The steep slope made cultivation difficult, and most winegrowers gave up—until 1983. At that time, Riesling would also have been an obvious choice, but the deep and rich marly soil with a higher clay content and excellent water reserves would allow any grape variety planted there to maintain excellent acidity and never suffer from drought. Recent vintages have proven this! This vineyard used to be an excellent site for noble rot, but because the harvest takes place earlier and under much drier conditions, it was very difficult to bring the grapes up to VT or SGN level without problems. Since 2020, this vineyard has been harvested healthy and at normal ripeness to produce a dry Pinot Gris. And it works!

Colour

Bright golden yellow with coppery reflections.

Nose

The 2022 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal is characterized by fine fruit reminiscent of peach, quince, pear, honeydew melon, and apricot. With contact with oxygen, spicy yeast notes, ginger and dried pastries, as well as anise and dried orange peel, emerge. It is beautifully powerful and elegant at the same time.

Palate

This Pinot Gris is characterized by its melting texture, juicy fruit, delicate saltiness, invigorating acidity, and piquant tannins. A fantastic food companion that happily embraces the challenge of intense spices and heat. It has outstanding aging potential. Those impatient to open this wine now are advised to decant it about two hours beforehand and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses, not too cold.

Wine Advocate

Score: 94

From 39-year-old vines on deep and rich marl soils containing a higher clay percentage with excellent water reserves, the 2022 Clos Jebsal Turckheim Pinot Gris is deep, clear and darker-toned in its intense, ripe and quite open yet elegant fruit aromas that initially intertwined with oatmeal and later most of all saline notes. On the palate, this is an intense and elegant, dry and gastronomic Jebsal Pinot with remarkably fine yet palatable tannins. The 2022 is complex and well balanced yet still very young, with aromas of ripe and preserved (Williams) pear and dark chocolate shavings. 13.4% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024.
