Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The Clos Jebsal lies directly below the Grand Cru Brand, separated by an impressive geological fault that very precisely demarcates the granite (primary period) of the Brand and the gypsum marl of the Keuper (secondary period). This small 1.3-hectare clos was replanted by my father, Léonard, in the late 1970s and planted with Pinot Gris in 1983. Facing south, on a very steep slope, the grapes ripen quickly. The marl soil is deep and cold in the lower part of the clos and on the terraces, while the limestone is more prominent in the upper part.
Vineyard Information
The year 2020 marks an important turning point in the style of the wines produced at Jebsal. The contrast between a very sunny exposure and deep marly soil allowed noble rot to develop regularly. We’ve produced the richest Grains Nobles wines on this terroir. However, climate change is now accelerating the ripening period. The development of noble rot in a warmer climate is not conducive to maintaining acidity, and botrytis, in particular, takes on a very different, much less noble appearance. Over the past 10 years, we’ve had increasing difficulty producing this type of wine. That’s why we decided to harvest the grapes in 2020, a very early year, before botrytis developed. 2020 will therefore be the driest Jebsal in its history, and this style is here to stay! The end of great sweet wines in Alsace? No, but late vintages will become increasingly rare in the future!
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal is characterized by intense yeasty spice, ripe apples, quince compote, candied walnuts, and fruit bread. At the same time, it exudes a salty note that lends it finesse and freshness, a truly stimulating and charming Pinot Gris in every respect.
Palate
This Pinot Gris is characterized by a rich texture, a fine sweetness, delicate saltiness, invigorating acidity, and piquant tannins. It plays around with the food it accompanies, and its acidity and saltiness contribute an invigorating freshness to rich dishes. This is how Pinot Gris brings joy! Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
