Wine Info
Olivier Humbrecht:
Of the 22 hectares of the Grand Cru Rangen, only 1 hectare is planted with Gewürztraminer! Domaine Zind-Humbrecht cultivates 0.5 hectares of this on the Clos-Saint-Urbain (5.5 hectares). This variety is sensitive to cold, especially during flowering, and is therefore particularly exposed at the height of the Rangen (350/480 m) and to the cold spring air currents that sweep down the Thann valley. For this reason, our two small plots are located directly above the Thur, in the lower part of the Rangen, where they benefit from the warmth of the river. The volcanic terroir of the Rangen is capable of dominating this grape variety, which is characterized by an aromatic smoky/flint character.
Maturation Information
Although harvested late, Gewürztraminer often ferments vigorously on the Rangen vines and often finishes with a fairly dry balance, even completely dry as in the 2020 vintage. This variety is usually bottled earlier, but with this wine, we felt that longer aging on the lees would allow the wine to better develop its power.
Color
Bright, dense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann reveals itself with a depth that is unparalleled. A wine like a thunderclap, simply beautiful, brilliant aromas present themselves on the nose: flint, smoky, almost bacony. With the more oxygen it demands, ginger, grapefruit compote, blood orange, mallow, and a hint of dried rose petals join in. A wine full of energy and expression, as the aroma already suggests.
Palate
On the palate, it grips and captivates with its power and compact, complex minerality. Its fruit remains in the background, the floral notes intensify, and with every sip, you become even more fascinated by this powerhouse of a wine. What a multi-layered Gewurztraminer, which, with its fine tannin structure, practically provokes, and does so in a wonderful way. A wine made for eternity, with fantastic storage and aging potential. A feast for the senses of dreamy opulence, a must-have pairing with magnificent and multifaceted cuisine! For the impatient, we recommend decanting it a day or two in advance and enjoying it from large Burgundy glasses.

Score: 96
The golden-colored 2020 Gewurztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain opens with ripe pear, dark chocolate, coriander and flinty aromas. On the palate, this is a rich, fresh, lively, piquant and grapefruit-bitter Gewürztraminer with fine tannins and long salinity. The finish is very long and still somewhat bitter, but this is a great, powerful and age-worthy Gewürz. Bottled with 15.6% de facto alcohol and 2.5 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.
