Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2019 (bio)Sebastian Bordthäuser: A modest entry with an elegant stature and a slender flow. The floral aromas also manifest themselves on the palate with great nobility, never loud, yet emphatically with a delicately pronounced profile. The gustatory windows open, the rose garden in front of the salon is reflected in the soft pink of the drink. With a creamy texture and a persistent finish, this Gewürztraminer combines fragrance, fruit, and aristocratic drinking pleasure with a slender body and great length. For now, next week, or the next decade. Always welcome.
About the wine
Gewurztraminer is the least represented grape variety at Clos-Saint-Urbain. Around 1,500 bottles are produced each year on a small area of 0.5 hectares. The Rangen has the ability to impose its flavour and character on the aromatic Gewurztraminer, which is a feat in itself, and also produces a relatively dry wine style.
Information on Vinification
In almost every vintage, it is the Rangen Gewurztraminer that ferments the most. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Rangen lie at the end of a cooler valley and at a relatively high altitude for Alsatian vineyards (over 350 m above sea level). The Gewurztraminer does not like these conditions, and this explains its rarity at this Grand Cru. However, the Thur River, which runs directly below the slopes of the Rangen, moderates the climate and allows the cultivation of this grape variety if planted close to the river. The 2019 vintage was harvested much later than most other Gewurztraminers, but fermented quickly and finished almost dry.
Colour
Radiant, dense golden yellow
Nose
The 2019 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann surprises with its immensely fresh aroma: orange flesh, peach, pear, grapefruit, numerous fragrant blossoms, matchstick notes, light, elegant tobacco, and citrusy ginger freshness combine with a fine peppery note. The vital and fresh magic of 2019 is also evident here in this impressive site with the Gewurztraminer par excellence!
Palate
The palate continues in a delicate and elegant manner – what lively acidity, what a playfulness, underscored by compact, complex, and impressive minerality. The juicy fruit, especially orange, combines wonderfully with its fine tannin structure; its vitality is also evident here in full. This wine floats; the higher alcohol content on the label can be easily ignored, as its delicacy, lightness, and silky texture are unparalleled. As with so many wines from Humbrecht in 2019, the rule is: buy it and put it away. What we’re seeing here is a feast, a true feast! Those with impatience are advised to decant it a day or two in advance and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses.
