Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2021 (bio)

Wine Info

Olivier Humbrecht:

Clos Windsbuhl is located above the village of Hunawihr and offers a beautiful view of the Alsatian valley floor and the famous Saint-Jacques le Majeur church. Due to its location near the Vosges Forest at an altitude of 300/350 m, this vineyard ripens relatively late, despite being on a steep east-south slope. The small “windy hill” lies on an ancient limestone cliff, the “Muschelkalk,” dating back to the Triassic period. The vines have little topsoil, are slow-growing, and are strongly influenced by the magnesium-rich, calcareous parent rock, and this also applies to the wines!

Vineyard Info

Back in 1987, we doubted whether this grape variety would be suitable for this vineyard, as Gewürztraminer really needs sun and more warmth to ripen. How wrong we were. Fortunately, we preserved the old vines and gave them a chance! This Clos produces amazing wines every vintage, including this exceptional and refined Gewurztraminer! However, this grape variety suffered severe losses in the spring of 2021, and the harvest was tiny.

Color

Bright, intense golden yellow.

Nose

The 2021 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is a beguiling and elegant representative of its kind: it is animated by immense freshness and complex minerality. The Gewürztraminer aromas emerge elegantly and restrainedly. In addition to citrus, orange, and orange zest, tart grapefruit zest notes and herbal hints of rosemary, thyme, and galangal characterize its aromatic spectrum.

Palate

A classic Gewürztraminer with a salty touch, delicate, restrained sweetness, and fine tannins. Its freshness and vibrancy are unparalleled, the combination of saltiness and fine tannins excellent. A true long-distance runner, already great to drink now and one that will prove even more wonderful in a few years. A true prime example of what Gewürztraminer should be; every sip tempts you to take another, and the dishes it accompanies love its fine salty and aromatic facets. Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.

Vinous

Score: 95

The 2021 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is from older plots of Gewurztraminer in the upper part of Windsbuhl on Triassic limestone. Its nose displays honey, lemon-edged rose petals and fresh ginger. While the nose signals sweetness, the palate is bone-dry, super-textured and shows full-on pithiness, shimmering with bitter almond and marzipan. The wine is dry, playing with your senses – a fantastic game that sets the tastebuds on high alert. The lemon zest finish is full of spice and really long. Wow. (Bone-dry)
