Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2020 (bio)
Christina Hilker: Delicate sweetness pairs with fresh acidity, salty and profound minerality, and a structure that shows grip and grips. Light-footed yet impressive, that’s how Gewürztraminer should taste, especially one that you’ll want to enjoy a glass or two more of with fine food. The aftertaste is cool and fresh, a truly lively wine. Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and not to enjoy it too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The Clos Windsbuhl lies above the village of Hunawihr and offers a beautiful view of the Alsatian valley floor and the famous church of Saint-Jacques le Majeur. Due to its location near the Vosges Forest at an altitude of 300/350 m, this vineyard ripens relatively late, despite being on a steep east-south slope. The small “windy hill” lies on an ancient limestone cliff, the “Muschelkalk” from the Triassic period. The vines have little topsoil, are slow-growing, and are strongly influenced by the magnesium-rich and calcareous parent rock, and this also applies to the wines!
Vintage Information
Gewürztraminer may be a challenge in such a location, but since it can be harvested quite late in each vintage, the wines are always harmoniously balanced and tolerate a certain sweetness very well. The 2020 is a classic Gewürztraminer from this exceptional vineyard.
Colour
Bright, intense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is a beguiling and elegant representative of its kind: green figs, pink pepper, and a deep, salty minerality underpinned by pear cream, apple, white chocolate, fresh ginger, and lime zest. All components are perfectly interwoven and captivating at every moment!
Palate
A classic Gewürztraminer with a salty touch, distinct sweetness, and a fine tannin. Its freshness and vibrancy are unparalleled; the combination of saltiness and sweetness is excellent. A true long-distance runner, already a great drinker now and will prove even more brilliant in a few years. A prime example of elegance, pure umami! A joy to pair with appropriate dishes; a wonderful Gewürztraminer full of vibrancy. Anyone impatient to open it now is advised to decant it at least one day in advance and to enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
