Wine Information

Gewürztraminer is probably not the most striking grape we harvest from the late-ripening Clos Windsbuhl, but it is the grape variety with the oldest history there. The good exposure (south/southeast) and the lighter, rocky limestone certainly contribute to perfect ripeness and ensure a very long hanging time for the grapes. The Clos Windsbuhl is consistent and very regular in style: never the most powerful, but always the most intense and finely perfumed. All the vines were planted in the 1960s or earlier. Vineyard Information

In 2018, the Windsbuhl weathered the warm, dry summer without any problems, producing beautiful grapes with excellent colour and ideal ripeness. It is consistently one of the slowest-fermenting wines and also one that retains one of the highest levels of residual sugar, a classic characteristic of this vineyard. (Olivier Humbrecht)

Nose

The 2018 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is unmistakably a Gewürztraminer: roses, grapefruit, grapefruit peel, elderberry pulp, licorice, cardamom, and ginger fill the nose, surprising us with citrusy freshness and vibrancy. Even the aroma reveals a truly elegant seducer.

Palate

Delicate sweetness pairs with fresh acidity, salty and profound minerality, and a structure that shows grip and grips. From vines averaging 48 years of age, the 2018 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl offers an aromatically still discreet yet spicy and yeasty-scented nose of roses, lychees, Indian spices and crushed stones in a shy yet substantial way. Full-bodied, round and grippy on the palate, this is a rich and (not overly) sweet Gewurz with soupier tension on the aromatic and fruity, very complex and persistent finish. Like all the wines from the Muschelkalk terroir of the Clos Windsbuhl, this is a seriously complex and tensioned yet still underdeveloped wine that needs at least two years to gain in finesse and easiness. Bitter orange flavors and toasted, salted peanut flavors on the finish. Very, very promising! Bottled in August 2019. 13.2% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
