Description

Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Auxerrois Clos Windsbuhl 2023 (bio)

The 2023 Clos Windsbuhl Auxerrois from Zind-Humbrecht comes from the Clos Windsbuhl, a high-altitude, southeast- and south-facing vineyard in Hunawihr. The vines were planted in 1989, directly next to the Chardonnay. The cool, late-ripening climate on the edge of the forest preserves freshness and acidity, while the shell limestone soil lends this rather soft varietal profile clear contours and tension. Normally part of the Zind cuvée, a small portion was vinified separately in 2023 – the result was so convincing that this wine was bottled in its own right. Fermentation was rapid and complete, and aging on the full lees lasted 16 months. The vines are on average 34 years old.

Colour

Intense straw yellow, bright and clear.

Nose

Ripe cantaloupe melon, nashi pear, and yellow, waxy apples outline the nose of the 2023 Clos Windsbuhl Auxerrois from Zind-Humbrecht. The top note features bright flowers such as linden blossom, green stone fruit, and a hint of blossom honey. Currently still youthful and quite taciturn—so pour it into a large glass!

Palate

For an Auxerrois, this is an extra-fresh fizz with rally stripes on the flanks: With comparatively high acidity and a low pH, it performs incredibly vertically on the palate in terms of freshness, almost tempting one to use the term “crisp.” With fine salt and subtle bass on the palate, the gentle fruit is nestled on cotton wool and is contoured by a distinctively bitter phenolic aftertaste. Tastes great now—will be even better in five years. The Porsche among the Auxerrois.

Vinous

Score: 89

The 2023 Auxerrois Clos Windsbuhl is from vines planted in 1989 on Triassic limestone, although this marks the first time this wine was made. The nose still swings a little with yeastiness on top of bright apple and pear notes. The palate is smooth and taut but comes with gentle fluidity. This is vivid and full of fruit and flow.
