Due to the dry conditions in the vineyards, 2022 is shaping up to produce lighter wines. The vines have closed off and held back at times over the course of the year. A unique wine from the terraced, steep Enkircher Ellergrub vineyard with ancient, ungrafted vines. The vines are on average over 100 years old. They grow on blue, hard slate with abundant quartzite inclusions. The old vines still produce a yield of just 15 hl/ha, which was fermented in tonneau barrels after approximately one day of maceration. The wines mature on the full lees in used barriques until September of the following year. No racking, no additives. After racking, they are allowed another year on the fine lees. With a low alcohol content of 11.5% vol., a powerful acidity of 7.8 g/l contrasts with a significantly less pronounced RZ of 9 g/l.

Nose

The Riesling “Große Eule” from the Ellergrub vineyard in Enkirch impresses with its dark, profound, and almost mysterious character. The fruit is concentrated in a tight, powerful beam. Targeted and focused on the result. Typical Riesling aromas are concentrated within: pear, peach, lemon, green and yellow apple. Lime and bergamot zest as well as kaffir lime leaves. It immediately reveals its deep, stony slate notes. The vineyards here are phenomenal. Jasmine tea and a herbal extract provide many dimensions of aroma. The herbal freshness is determined by lemon balm, lemon thyme, and coriander. Anise and fennel next to orange trees in full bloom build up with patience. The aromas all cling to our olfactory organs for minutes. A great nose.

Palate

It requires hardly any alcohol and can still play up the large orchestra of aromas and textures. Similar to the nose, the palate is also tightly knit and concentrated. Always light on its feet and yet full of aromatic diversity. Hats off to this masterpiece of contemporary Riesling. Its tea-like character, full of phenols and structure, with sensational length, comes into its own here. A light, tart note underscores the fruit and herbal aromas for minutes. Its stony finish paired with the very well-integrated acidity structure is a benchmark. It manifests itself firmly on the palate for minutes.
