Clos Gelida is a classic within the El Pep winery. Not only does it combine the four origins of the four owner families, but also four different grape varieties, with Xarel-lo as the dominant grape. 50% is this grape variety, followed by 20% Macabeo and 15% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The best terroirs for each variety were selected. The Macabeo grows in Can Simon, the Pinot Noir in Can Prats. The Xarel-lo comes from Can Castany, and the Chardonnay is cultivated in Can Miquel. In the 2018 vintage, after the drought of previous years, nature rewarded us with rain in the spring and cool temperatures shortly before the harvest. This slowed the ripening process before the harvest. Fermentation takes place in small containers. The Brut Nature Gran Reserva matures on the lees for at least 40 months. The four grape varieties and four origins were added between August 11 and September 25. Analytically, it results in 0.5g/l residual sugar and 6.4g/l acidity.

Colour

Bright lemon yellow with green reflections, with very even perlage and a light mousse.

Nose

The nose contains some expected characteristics. First, its chalky, linear character is worth mentioning. Its yeasty side also fits perfectly with this. The three years of aging on the lees are clearly and beautifully recognizable. In addition, there are plenty of maritime elements such as fresh algae, sea spray, and oyster shell. From the fruity side, it contributes lemon, lime, and yellow apple.

Palate

The palate follows on directly from these impressions. It’s bone-dry and very linear. It reveals its cool, stony side, brimming with minerality. It benefits from its present acidity, which infuses it with plenty of energy. Here, too, the fruit is in the background. Much more important here is its maritime character, supported by a growing ethereal breeze.
