Located in the heart of Sicily, a good 65 km southwest of Palermo, the winery is part of the Trapani Municipal Consortium. The family business was founded by Vito’s grandfather in 1958, but had to be closed in 1993 due to economic difficulties. Deeply rooted in his homeland, Vito Lauria nurtured the desire to revive the winery and carry his family’s winemaking heritage into the future. Familiar with his grandfather’s working methods from an early age, he decided to study viticulture and oenology. Preserving the soils, the foundations of his homeland and his vines, is the guarantee of origin-specific wines. The Quarantasarme is in a class of its own in VinoLauria’s portfolio: This rare and most valuable wine is born from the careful cultivation of 40 Perricone vines (Quarantasarme), an ancient Sicilian unit of measurement equivalent to approximately 80 hectares, located between Alcamo and Campo Reale. Vito Lauria monitors this area very closely every year, and only when he discovers a vineyard with perfect ripeness is this wine purchased from 100% old Perricone vines. The grapes are harvested from mid-October, followed by cryo-fermentation for 24 hours and fermentation for 15 days at 15 degrees Celsius. The wine then ages for 12 months in large, untoasted oak barrels.

Nose

The nose of the 2019 Quarantasarme from VinoLauria is very calm, tidy, and clear. The fruit presents itself in a beautiful array, as if someone had draped it on a cool marble floor. The blackberries, plums, and blueberries are clearly defined, beneath which shimmer mineral notes of wet stone and distinctive spices of tobacco, freshly tanned leather, and dark spices like pepper and black cardamom.

Palate

It is also refreshing on the first sip, the extract-rich fruit always coolly grounded by tart phenolics and striking minerality. This gives it freshness and the popular grip that constantly gets the saliva flowing. Like the finest velvet, its tannins are tightly woven, low-pile, and shimmering violet, complemented by the sinewy, taut fruit, which is largely defined by the extract.
