Product description for Victoria Ordóñez La Pasajera 2024 (bio)
It takes a lot of chutzpah to revive old, steep, and labor-intensive vineyards in 2015 and establish the first and only winery in decades in a region once world-famous for its wines, but which has since experienced unprecedented decline. Victoria Ordóñez had the chutzpah and the right people on her side to establish this important project in the Sierras de Málaga. The daughter of a wine merchant, she had actually earned a doctorate in medicine. But at some point, she became aware of the neglected wine-cultural heritage and the associated abandoned vineyards, and began to get involved. Málaga, and that means, above all, Pédro Ximénez, who used to mostly produce fortified and sweet wines, but for her, it’s dry and terroir-focused. Added to this is the region’s second important grape variety, Moscatel de Málaga, which is also causing a sensation.
Color
Bright straw yellow with greenish reflections.
Nose
On the nose, the Verdejo presents its typical fruity character, yet simultaneously interspersed with green elements. Aromas of grapefruit, mango, grilled pineapple, ripe peach, and juicy Nash pear flow from the glass—the fruit pours forth generously. A touch of lemon zest and ripe Meyer lemon complement the whole in a summery, fresh way. The wine’s fruitiness is at its best, especially in warm temperatures. Fortunately, racy green elements come to the fore as a contrast: the nose also reveals lemon balm, sage, sorrel, chervil, and parsley. This cornucopia of herbs makes the nose exciting – a play between fruit and tart and herbal accents.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is wonderfully fruity – immediately reminiscent of biting into crisp, fresh Granny Smith apples. Here, too, green and yellow fruity aromas combine. It is not primarily characterized by ripe, exotic fruit, but rather by intensely fragrant local fruits. The herbal aromas also bring a light, fresh kick to the palate in the aftertaste. With medium acidity, it is well balanced, dances on the fruit, and plays with an uncomplicated drinking flow.
