Product description for Victoria Ordóñez Voladeros 2022
It takes a lot of chutzpah to revive old, steep, and labour-intensive vineyards in 2015 and establish the first and only winery in decades in a region once world-famous for its wines, which has since experienced unprecedented decline. Victoria Ordóñez had the chutzpah and the right people on her side to establish this important project in the Sierras de Málaga. The daughter of a wine merchant, she had actually earned a doctorate in medicine. But at some point, she became aware of the neglected wine-cultural heritage and the associated abandoned vineyards, and began to get involved. Málaga, and that means, above all, Pédro Ximénez, who used to mostly produce fortified wines with sweet vines, but in her case, it’s dry and terroir-focused. Added to this is the region’s second important grape variety, Moscatel de Málaga, which is also causing a sensation.
Information about the wine
Málaga was once one of the largest and most famous wine regions in the world. The wines were drunk by Goethe and Schiller and auctioned at Christie’s in London. Then, in 1872, phylloxera struck and destroyed 112,000 hectares of vineyards. After that, Málaga fell into a long slumber. Winemaker Victoria Ordoñez, who studied with legendary winemaker Alois Kracher, is now breathing new life into the region. Her white wine, “Voladeros,” is a dry PX in the style of Málaga’s classic mountain wines. It comes from two old vineyards with ungrafted Pedro Ximénez vines that survived the phylloxera plague in the 19th century. Yields are less than 1,000 kg per hectare, and the vineyards are located at an altitude of 800 to 1,000 meters. For the Voladeros, the winemaker uses only the first-run must. The wine then matures on the fine lees for nine months in 500-liter oak barrels. The result is one of Spain’s best and most exceptional white wines.

Nose
The 2022 Voladeros offers a sensual and captivating nose with aromas of quince, wild fennel, white flowers, and a hint of citrus fruit. Anyone who associates heat with Andalusia will be surprised by how fresh and delicate the bouquet of this Mediterranean mountain wine is.
Palate
The Voladeros stands for finesse, elegance, and freshness. This white wine is always an unvarnished expression of the terroir—the old vines on barren soils in a Mediterranean mountain climate—as well as the vintage. In cool years, the alcohol content of Voladero can reach 10.5%. In warm years, like 2022, it reaches 13.5%. Depending on the vintage, the body can be leaner or fuller. What Voladeros always offers, however, is minerality, precision, and superbly fresh. The 2022 vintage is aromatically expressive, creamy and silky on the palate, elegant and complex. The icing on the cake is the long, spicy finish, whose light herbal bitterness is very invigorating. This is a stimulating and unique wine.
