Nose
The 2017 SW Beerenauslese presents itself with exuberant aromas of honey-glazed and roasted hazelnuts, dried dates, apricot chutney, sweet apple, and exciting spice notes from Kampot pepper to cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon. It truly heralds a sweet and intense work of art that comes close to perfection.
Palate
Once on the tongue, the fascination increases immeasurably. The spectacular, beautiful sweetness is framed by an extremely lively acidity, complemented by the spicy notes of the nose. The cinnamon and peppery components stimulate the palate in a most pleasant way and build up to a never-ending aftertaste. Even though hundreds of dishes immediately come to mind, this wine would also be perfectly placed as a magnificent solitary wine, as it shines above everything else. In combination, I would focus on dishes that are intense yet purist, as this wonderful wine needs no unnecessary distractions.

Velich’s 2017 Beerenauslese SW is from the Seewinkel yet not sold under the DAC origin but as Burgenland wine. It is a Welschriesling with some percent of Muscat and Sämling 88 (a.k.a. Scheurebe). “The grapes were perfectly ripe and healthy when botrytis settled in early October and spread quickly,” reports Heinz Velich. The 2017 exhibits an intense orange color with a greenish shimmer. The bouquet is intense and spicy but also quite matured for a wine of less than six years. Concentrated apricot aromas intertwined with oxidative and some oaky and mushroom notes lead to an intense, concentrated and less sweet than fiery palate. The wine has 14.5% stated alcohol and tasted much less sweet than most of its peers nowadays. It is an elegant and balanced BA with dried apricot and caramel aromas but also nutty notes and a savory citrus freshness on the finely bitter finish. The finish is long and intense and reveals nougat notes without becoming really sweet. It’s rather rich and full-bodied, and I’d serve with either autumn dishes (even game) or desserts with walnut elements. Natural cork. Tasted in August 2023.
