Information about the Wine

The Valdemonjas winery is located in the so-called Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero, where the concentration of renowned producers is particularly high. Valdemonjas joins the ranks of the region’s top wineries, even if the bodega’s style is somewhat different—the wines appear more unvarnished and, despite all their power, less heavy than the classic Ribera style. This is already evident in the excellent entry-level wine, El Primer Beso, which is aged exclusively in steel and concrete tanks and sees no wood. It is an organically certified red wine made from 25-year-old Tempranillo vines.

The bouquet offers an attractive combination of earthy minerality and fresh blue and dark fruit. The aromas appear pure and unadulterated and are already very expressive for the relatively young 2021 vintage.

Palate

On the palate, the El Primer Beso 2021 is surprisingly lean and juicy for a wine from the Ribera del Duero. While it’s no lightweight, freshness and drinkability are clearly paramount here. The red wine has fine tannins and a soft, polished texture. The finish is medium-long, with a subtle, stimulating spiciness. Overall, this wine is very tasty, and it defines itself not only by what it has, but also by what it lacks: namely, no oak, no overripeness, and no overextraction. It is thus a fresh and drinkable Ribera, and also at a good price, which cuts a fine figure as a food accompaniment and as a solo wine.
