Marian Henß:2016 Pam de Nas is made from the typical Priorat grape varieties, Garnatxa and Samsó. It presents itself like the “little black dress.” A classic in women’s fashion that is never out of place. Timeless. Always an eye-catcher. Pam de Nas appears as if wrapped in silk, and the beautiful, dark fruit is encased in it. Full of elegance, intensity, and charisma, it opens up in the glass and on the palate. Light-footed would be the wrong word for a Priorat. But it is not in the least bit heavy. The cool mouthfeel and the fine minerality contrast with the intense fruit from the hot climate. The cool nights there support this effect.

When the Vives family founded the winery in 2004, they aimed to produce first-class wines. Particular attention was paid to combining the authenticity and terroir of the Priorat with an elegance more commonly found in Burgundy. Star oenologist Toni Coca has overseen the project from the outset. The winery’s own vineyards are farmed organically, but they also purchase premium grapes from other winemakers, as not all of the vines on their own plots are yet old enough to meet the high standards. The winery is located in the heart of the Priorat: in Gratallops. They strive to transform the natural conditions into wine in the most authentic way possible. The 2016 Pam de Nas blends the region’s two most important varieties: Garnacha and Cariñena. The winery uses the oldest vines and best vineyards for this cuvée. The wine is aged 100% in new French barriques.

Nose

Trossos del Priorat finds the quintessence of its terroir in this cuvée. Pam de Nas is deep and dark on the nose. Absolutely dense and intense, without conveying a feeling of heaviness. Red currants, cassis, elderberries, and blackberries are on one side. In contrast, green walnuts, black olives, cocoa butter, and dark chocolate rise up. A touch of leather, acacia wood, and juniper strongly support this. Almond blossom, as well as roasted almonds and Mediterranean spices, provide the crowning touch.
