The Trapet family has been growing wine in Gevrey-Chambertin for six generations. Jean-Louis Trapet took over the estate from his father in 1992 and took it to new heights in terms of quality. To achieve the greatest possible expression of the region’s origins, yields were reduced and management practices were changed. Since 1997, Trapet has been cultivating wine on a good 14 hectares according to biodynamic principles, and fining and filtration are also avoided in the cellar. The domaine owns vineyards in the best Grand and Premier Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin. With the marriage of Jean-Louis and Andrée, a native Alsatian, the Alsatian vineyards and the branch in Riquewihr came into the marriage. Since Andrée, as a winegrower’s daughter, is equally attached to the soils of her homeland, there was no either/or, but only a both/and. Thus, Domaine Trapet emerged from the domain of Jean-Pierre and Hélène Graye, offering the Trapets the rare opportunity to work with two historic terroirs. The land is also cultivated according to biodynamic guidelines. The Schlossberg, north of Riquewihr, extends from 230 to 350 m in altitude and is located in the municipality of Kientzheim. The Kaysersberg section consists of greywacke sandstone and Devonian slate, which is broken up in the northeastern part by the intrusive granite of Thannenkirch. Due to its steep location, the Schlossberg is cultivated in terraces and comprises a good 80 hectares of vineyards, the majority of which are Riesling.

Light straw yellow with brilliant reflections.

Nose

The 2018 Schlossberg Riesling Grand Cru from Domaine Trapet is expansive and generous on the nose. Aromas of ripe stone fruit such as yellow apples mingle with fresh citrus notes of orange zest and green mandarin. Garnished with the scent of a freshly mown summer meadow, a spoonful of black locust honey, and a bouquet of white blossoms, it is minerally grounded by notes of wet pebbles. Complex and multi-layered, it demands a carafe with a firm voice when young, and upside down!

Palate

The Schlossberg is also expansive, generous, and enormously powerful on the first sip. Since it always needs a few years of bottle aging to fully develop its potential, it is firm and closed when young. The palate practically pulsates with complexity, the acidity elegantly interwoven into the overall texture of the wine. The fine phenolic contours it razor-sharp and is supported by profound minerality that accompanies it into the long, saline finish.

The Trapet 2018 Schlossberg Riesling opens with an intense and aromatic bouquet of super ripe and healthy white fruits that host a fine tone of crushed or weathered granite but clearly represent the warm aspects of this terroir. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, round and elegant Riesling with ripe and rather mild acidity and an intense, compact and persistent finish with fine, saline tannin grip. It has good and complex length, yet it’s still not highly stimulating. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
