Description

Product description for Trapet Alsace Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru 2010

Wine Information

This Riesling comes from the Grand Cru Schlossberg vineyard, north of Kientzheim and Kayserberg. The vineyard extends from an altitude of 230 to 350 meters. The Schlossberg is so steep that it has been terraced. The soil of the Schlossberg is primarily granite and a mixture of greywacke and sandstone. The northern part is influenced by Thannenkirch granite. The soils are extremely mineral-rich.

Nose

The Grand Cru Schlossberg opens with ripe and opulent notes of caramelized apples and apricots, candied lemons and ginger, and a hint of honey, overshadowed by a light cloud of white flowers. The wine exudes a certain sweetness, but also power and freshness.

Palate

Normally, the Trapet Schlossberg Grand Cru Riesling is vinified largely dry. However, in 2010, there is a certain amount of residual sugar, making the wine appear more semi-dry and somewhat softer than usual. This doesn’t detract from the wine—quite the opposite, in fact; the precise acidity provides excellent balance, and the two together create a delicious, almost cool texture. Here, too, caramelized or candied citrus, pome, and stone fruits combine. There’s also a hint of cool stone and mint.

Wine Advocate

Score: 92?

Tasted from my wine library, the 2010 Schlossberg Riesling displays a golden color and is dramatically oxidized compared to the 2011 Sporen Riesling. Not bad, though, just different and probably not intended. However, the nose shows intense and elegant ripe fruit with yeasty and some oaky notes but most of all cider or even clear apple juice aromas. Not fully dry on the rather medium-sweet palate, this is a round and lush yet savory and finely bitter-finishing Schlossberg with fine and lively acidity plus fine tannins. This is a strange but interesting bottle that I tend to love, though I know many consumers would complain. So, this isn’t a really representative score, but it summarizes how I see this particular bottle. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in February 2023.
