Product description for Trapet Alsace Gewürztraminer Sonnenglanz Grand Cru 2018 (bio)
The Trapet family has been growing wine in Gevrey-Chambertin for six generations. Jean-Louis Trapet took over the estate from his father in 1992 and led it to new heights in terms of quality. To achieve the greatest possible expression of the region’s origins, yields were reduced and management practices changed. Since 1997, Trapet has been cultivating wine on a good 14 hectares according to biodynamic principles, and fining and filtration are also avoided in the cellar. The domaine owns vineyards in the best Grand and Premier Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin. When Jean-Louis married Andrée, a native Alsatian, the vineyards and the branch in Riquewihr came into the marriage. Since Andrée, as the daughter of a winemaker with a strong sense of home, is just as attached to the soils of her homeland as her husband, there was no either/or, but only a both/and. Thus, Domaine Trapet emerged from the domain of Jean-Pierre and Hélène Graye, offering the couple the rare opportunity to work with two historic terroirs. The land is also cultivated according to biodynamic guidelines. Located north of the village exit of Beblenheim towards Zellenberg, the Grand Cru Sonnenglanz faces southeast at 220-270 meters above sea level. The site is predominantly planted with Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer and covers a total area of 32.80 hectares. The homogeneous soils consist of Tertiary border conglomerate of the Rhine Graben limestone and interspersed marls of Eo-Oligocene age, which together form a heavy, well-structured, and stony limestone soil.
Color
Light golden yellow with bright reflections, bright and clear.
Nose
The 2018 Sonnenglanz Gewürztraminer Grand Cru from Domaine Trapet pulls out all the stops for the grape variety, but does so with pleasant understatement. White peach and linden blossoms tentatively open the overture before orange zest and green mandarin oranges enrich the orchestra. This is followed by a handful of pink rose petals and a honey-drenched honeycomb, all grounded by the profound beat on wet limestone. The carafe lurks in the pit.
Palate
Impressively taut with fine minerality and a creamy texture, this high-performance spice nestles itself in the connoisseur’s palate. With a creamy texture, it is flanked by citrus aromas on a minerally saline foundation. Nothing exuberant or expansive adorns it; rather, it captivates with precision and tremendous discipline on the palate. Refined and clear, the sweetness is perfectly embedded in the compact structure of the wine, which, like all great spices, will thank you for its appropriate maturity.

The 2018 Sonnenglanz Gewurztraminer is a classic in the making. It’s a clear, bright, aromatic and wholehearted Gewürztraminer on the deep and pretty complex nose, with clear and concentrated tropical fruit aromas and spicy as well as stony/flinty and also phenolics notes. Round and pretty sweet on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and elegant, vital and saline Gewurz with a long, vocal and saline finish with good tannin grip to catch up with the sweetness that is slightly indicated as liquoreux on the back label and also more hedonistic on the palate. It seems as if the Trapets were still experimenting with the style of their grand cru, given the vintages tasted for this report. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
