Description
Product description for Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc AOC 2023
The Chassagne-Montrachet Village comes from the Les Houillères plot, with small portions of En Journoblot and declassified 1er Crus. There are nine plots in total. Les Houillères was planted in 1989 with a mass selection. This plot ripens very early and is therefore almost always the first to be harvested. The soils are shallow and deep, consisting of a red clay-limestone mixture: it is found on the ridge of the famous Les Enceignères site. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrels and tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally, and the wine remains on its lees without any bâtonnage. The proportion of new wood is around 20%. Sulphur addition only takes place in the last six months in the barrel, and this is done several times with minimal doses, so that the wine never reaches a total concentration above 35 mg/l.
Colour
Medium straw yellow
Nose
Thomas Morey’s Chassagne-Montrachet 2023 presents itself as a fine, sensual, ripe, vintage-typical Chardonnay with a small, perfectly applied gunpowder reduction, fine spice notes containing a minimal hint of cloves and cinnamon, a touch of wood, and white-fleshed fruits, with the peach standing out slightly. Taken together, the nose is a typical local wine with wonderful balance.
Palate
On the palate, the Chassagne-Montrachet is elegant, juicy, and round, silky and dense with a clear structure and a precise body. It is round with the warmth of the vintage, yet with a pleasant tension. It also has a beautiful length. The Chassagne-Montrachet is juicy, slightly citrusy, with hints of pineapple, gunpowder, a touch of wood, and a slightly sparkling minerality. It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet wine. Grapes from both young and old vines, from both white and red soils, were used here, resulting in a truly perfect reflection of the character of the area.
