Product description for Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru blanc Clos Saint-Jean AOC 2023
The Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean comes from the eponymous 1er Cru Climat. The Clos Saint-Jean comprises the actual Clos Saint-Jean (5.08 hectares), Les Rébiches (5.45 hectares), Les Murées (1.61 hectares), and the Chassagne du Clos Saint-Jean (2.02 hectares). The latter is the original, enclosed clos belonging to the nunnery of Saint-Jean le Grand in Autun and was planted in 589. The majority of the vineyard has red soils. This is also where Thomas Morey produces his red Clos Saint-Jean. The white comes from small plots with white soils in Les Rébiches. The wine comes from vines planted partly in 2017 and partly from vines over 60 years old. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrels and tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and the wine remains on its lees without any bâtonnage. The proportion of new wood is around 20%. Sulfurization only takes place in the last six months in the barrel, and this is done several times with minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l overall.
Colour
Intense straw yellow with green reflections
Nose
Thomas Morey’s Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean 2023 is currently the most dynamic wine. It presents an elegant reduction on the nose, which quickly blends with citrus notes, pineapple, green ripe notes of star fruit, greengages, and apples, as well as the finest wood and a powder of vanilla. This is very successful and inviting.
Palate
On the palate, this 1er Cru presents itself with plenty of juice and the finest fruit. The Chassagne-Montrachet possesses excellent tension and depth, appears sexy in its maturity, and is also clearly structured, very present, long, and powerful in the long finish. The acidity is also present. The wine has muscle and power and is currently somewhat more aggressive than the others in the range.
