Product description for Terroir Sense Fronteres Guix Vermell 2018

Info

Dominik Huber & Tatjana Peceric, Head Winemakers of Terroir al Limit and Terroir Sense Fronteres, are the dual helm of these wines. The duo has expanded their portfolio of highly acclaimed wines from Priorat to include the neighboring region of Montsant. The top cuvée of the new project is called Guix Vermell and comes from the Montalts vineyard in the immediate vicinity of their Les Manyes vineyard, only on the other side of the district. Both wineries follow the three-tier system of region, village, and Grand Cru, as we know it from Burgundy: Bourgogne, Village, and Grand Cru. The Premier Cru is omitted for the time being. In both projects, the goal is for the wines to reach the bottle cool and full of finesse. At the Terroir Sens Fronteres winery, this has been achieved by removing wooden vessels and using concrete and clay. At Terroir al Limit, over the past 15 years, they have evolved from small wooden barrels to full-bodied foudres. This will also be the next step here. The Guix Vermell is made from the Garnacha Fina grape variety. This is considered the ultimate in the La Figuera region. In the 2018 vintage, they filled 1,600 bottles.

Colour

Dense, sparkling cherry red

Nose

The Guix Vermell appears absolutely dark and profound. Yet it doesn’t convey the slightest feeling of fullness or heaviness. And we all know that Garnacha can be the basis of the greatest calibers of Spanish red wines. It is permeated with darkness, coolness, and elegance. It floats absolutely weightlessly in the glass. Hardly any change. An absolute manifesto. In the fashion industry, this timeless marvel would be called the “little black dress.” Always appropriate, never out of style. It displays dark, almost black fruits such as blackberry, cassis, and black currants. A touch of tar, leather, and licorice underscores this colour scheme. Olives, rosemary, and juniper contribute Mediterranean and ethereal elements. White pepper and an almost bloody nose are almost reminiscent of Syrah from the northern Rhône.

Palate

It grips the palate firmly. With considerable punch and captivating, yet fine-grained tannins, it fills the mouth with the first small sip. The adjectives dark, cool, and elegant are absolutely appropriate here, too. It coats the palate with an almost silky feel. The Mediterranean spice clearly comes through. Meaty and juicy at the same time. It really whets the appetite for more. Subtle roasted aromas linger in the aftertaste, immediately bringing thoughts to the new barbecue cookbook.

Wine Advocate

Score: 96

The wine that was intended to be called Montals is now 2018 Guix Vermell, as the Montals name was already registered. It comes from a vineyard located next to Les Manyes in Priorat, a vineyard that they purchased together with Les Manyes (from Terroir al Limit). This is the first vineyard as you cross from Priorat into Montsant, so the soils and climate are basically the same. The vines were planted some 60 years ago at some 800 meters in altitude, and they do a selection of the best parts from the four hectares they own there. The wine fermented and matured in clay amphorae, with a short élevage of six months and then was put into bottle. There are notes of raspberries, red cherries, acid strawberry, violets and spices; it’s very balanced and insinuating, open and pure, elegant and harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. I tasted this next to the 2016 Les Manyes from Terroir al Limit, and the wines are very different; they have completely different aromas, and there is more depth and complexity in the wine from Priorat. But this is really superb, and it’s still very young and should also develop in bottle. 1,600 bottles produced.
