Description

Product description for Tenuta di Castellaro Nero Ossidiana IGT 2017 (bio)

Info

This cuvée, made from 90% Corinto and 10% Nero d’Avola, is grown at an altitude of 350 m on volcanic and sandy soil. Spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels for one year, followed by stabilization in steel tanks. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Colour

Bright, dark cherry red, light reflections.

Nose

The Nero Ossidiana from Tenuta di Castellaro offers an ambivalent opening. On the one hand, it presents dark, spicy aromas. These are contrasted by bright, clear notes. Morello cherries, blackberries, roasted aromas of burnt wood, and black pepper are dominant and prominent. Cinnamon zest and star anise also feature. White currants, raspberries, and jasmine blossoms counteract this, repeatedly breaking through the intensity. The cuvée of Corinto and Nero d’Avola has a pleasantly Christmassy feel, warming yet enlivened by lightness.

Palate

On the palate, it initially appears cool and elegant. The volcanic rock provides a fine polish and a mineral mouthfeel. At the same time, it presents a very fleshy texture. Despite all the dark impressions, the fruit now appears brighter and lighter. Rosehip and currants in particular stand out. The delicate tannins provide a positive accent. On the palate, it dances playfully and seductively. The juiciness invites you to empty the bottle in large gulps. The finish now also reveals a hint of oregano and dark stone fruit.

Wine Advocate

Score: 92

The Tenuta di Castellaro 2017 Nero Ossidiana is a blend of 90% Corinto Nero and 10% Nero d’Avola that opens to a mid-weight texture and a dark garnet color. The bouquet is very elegant and fragrant with a whiff of red roses that makes a nice first impression. That floral preface is followed by fainter tones of cherry and cassis with some iron ore or rusty nail. The fruit is harvested from a three-hectare parcel (at 350 meters in elevation) with very deep sandy volcanic soils that are rich in minerals. What stands out most in this 6,700-bottle production is the delicate and pretty nature of those aromas.

Vinous

Score: 91

The 2017 Nero Ossidiana is dark and animalistic, as wild herbs and hints of musk give way to crushed blackberries and black porous stones. It’s silky and pliant, striking a balance of zesty acids, minerals and tart black fruits that creates a lovely symmetry. A subtle coating of fine tannin lingers, framing the experience well, as this finishes lightly structured and persistent. The Ossidiana is nicely balanced and aims to please. It’s a blend of 90% Corinto Nero and 10% Nero d’Avola.
