Information about the wine

Custero is a red wine traditionally produced in the villages of the Basque region of Rioja: Whole grapes are crushed by foot in an open vat and then fermented with the stems. In Rioja, these wines are called “Cosechero”; they are bottled young and enjoyed young, unlike the classic barrique-aged Riojas. Cosechero wines emphasize fruit, freshness, and drinkability. The 2023 Custero is undoubtedly one of the best traditional Cosechero wines in Rioja Alavesa, as it also possesses character. It is made from 60% Garnacha, 20% Tempranillo, and seven other red and white grapes. Winemaker Roberto Olivan ages the wine in used wooden barrels and concrete tanks.

The bouquet offers fresh fruit aromas such as blackberry and cherry. The beauty and attraction of this Cosechero is that, despite its fruitiness, it is not a one-dimensional fruit drop, as the fruit blends with an earthy minerality.

Palate

The Custero 2023 is a wonderful drinking wine: round on the palate with soft acidity, as well as fresh, clear, and juicy. You can notice the influence of its main variety, Garnacha, in this respect. This is an approachable and uncomplicated wine that nevertheless possesses a certain depth, length, and personality. It has fine-grained tannins, and you don’t notice its 15% alcohol by volume at all, as the alcohol is superbly integrated. The so-called Cosechero wines of Rioja, like the Custero, are never about complexity, but about drinking pleasure. And this red wine fulfills this claim with flying colours.
