Product description for Tentenublo Escondite del Ardacho, Las Guillermas 2019
Information about the wine
Las Guillermas comes from two neighboring plots, one planted with Tempranillo and the other with the white Viura. Together, the two vineyards cover an area of 0.62 hectares. The vines are each almost 70 years old and are located in Rioja Alavesa at an altitude of 400 meters. Tempranillo (60%) and Viura (40%) are harvested and fermented together. The wine then ages for 9 months in used wooden barrels.
Colour
Cherry red
Nose
The wine is super fresh, but lacks the harsh coolness of the other two plot wines from the Escondite del Ardacho range. The bouquet reveals red fruit and even apple (skin). The white Viura is quite evident here.
Palate
Las Guillermas 2019 is a red wine with the soul of a white wine. It has an incredibly refreshing acidity, typical of Viura from Rioja. The white wine grape, which makes up 40 percent of the blend, definitely leaves its mark on the wine. The wine has bite, fine tannins, a lean body, and a taut finish. The focus is clearly on freshness and crispness, rather than fullness and concentration. In a blind tasting, one would probably place this wine in Galicia. A magnificent and drinkable single-parcel wine. Not your usual Rioja.

Wine Advocate
Score: 92
The 2019 Escondite del Ardacho Las Guillermas comes from two plots, 0.4 hectares of Tempranillo on gravel soils and 0.22 hectares of white Viura on white marl soils, all harvested and fermented together with full clusters. This is the warmest plot that produces more Mediterranean and juicy wines, especially in a vintage like 2019, but the wine keeps very good acidity. For Oliván, the co-fermentation works very well, but you have to work in the vineyard to be able to harvest the grapes at the same time and here the acidity comes mostly from the Viura, which lightens the Tempranillo that in that part of the village gets quite ripe. The fruit is black and the tannins abundant and chalky. A powerful red that filled 1,625 bottles in July 2020. The prices are set proportional to the cost of working the vineyard, to make Tempranillo and Viura ripen at the same time.
