Wine Information

The El Abundillano 2023 comes from a 0.95-hectare single vineyard planted with 90% Garnacha, 9% Tempranillo, and 1% Malvasia Riojana. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 590 meters in the Basque region of Rioja Alavesa. In this subzone, the Garnacha grape variety is extremely rare these days, if at all, then in very old vineyards like this one; the vines are 98 to 113 years old. The plot is exposed and thus unprotected from the north wind Cierzo. Added to this is a mixed Atlantic-Mediterranean climate. The soil consists of marl and sandstone with a high iron oxide content. Winemaker Roberto Oliván ferments the grapes spontaneously in open vats and ages the wine for nine months in used wooden barrels. 1,626 bottles of the 2023 vintage were bottled.

Nose

The bouquet offers ripe red fruit, similar to cherry, as one would associate with the Garnacha grape variety. This is complemented by a mix of aromatic herbs such as thyme and oregano. Overall, the nose is very fresh and sensual, and as clear as a mountain stream.

Palate

The attack is elegant, with a silky texture and soft, fine tannins. A peppery spice contrasts beautifully with the ripe red fruit. The 15% alcohol content is excellently integrated and beautifully balanced with the acidity and medium, elegant body. Everything appears very pure and clear; there is no trace of any woody notes. Last but not least, the El Abundillano 2023 offers a long, juicy finish with a stimulating spice.
