Description
Product description for Sottimano Pairolero, Barbera d’Alba DOC Superiore 2022
The Azienda Agricola Sottimano was founded in the 1960s by Rino Sottimano and is located in the Cottà vineyard. In the following decades, the estate expanded to include the Currà , Fausoni, Basarin, and Pajoré crus. Today, it is run by his son Andrea and his sisters Elena and Claudia. Located in the triangle formed by Barbaresco, Neive, and Treiso, Sottimano has been practicing biodynamic practices for years. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with the wine’s own yeasts, and maceration typically lasts 25 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously in French oak barrels. The wines age for 15 months in tonneau barrels and are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Color
Dark ruby red with purple reflections.
Nose
The nose of the 2022 Pairolero Barbera d’Alba is life-affirming and full of generous fruit. Black cherries, blackberries, mulberries, and elderberries are framed by roasted notes of espresso and roasted nuts.
Palate
The first sip is disciplined, with a distinctive acidity and a clearly defined character. The exuberant cherry fruit of the nose continues on the palate, accompanied by stimulating, delicate tannins. The slightly rough texture enhances the already rapid drinking flow and encourages frequent refills.

The Sottimano 2022 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Pairolero was born in a vintage that was quite problematic for Andrea Sottimano, especially in terms of his Nebbiolo. He decided not to make his single-vineyard Barbarescos in 2022. Barbera, however, is a different animal that reacts well to hot vintages. This wine reveals a dark character with baked plum and blackberry coulis. It’s quite a mouthful and pleasantly chewy in texture.

Tasted from barrel, the 2022 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Pairolero is a very young wine that has just finished its malolactic fermentation. Dense and pliant, with tremendous fruit purity, the 2022 is shaping up to be a jewel. I tasted it from cask, before any racking and without any sulfur additions at all. It is such an impressive young wine.
