Product description for Château de Pibarnon Château de Pibarnon Rouge AOC 2017
Provence is certainly not short of stunningly beautiful locations. But anyone who has ever visited Château Pibarnon in the Bandol appellation knows the magic of this winery and its terraced vineyards, from which one can see the nearby Mediterranean. In 1989, Eric de Saint Victor took over management of the estate from his father and developed it into one of the finest in Provence. A qualified biologist, he runs the winery organically using biodynamic methods. Five wines are produced in the old cellars: a rare Bandol Blanc and the wines for which the appellation is world-famous: Bandol Rouge and Bandol Rosé, each vinified as a Vin de Garde made from 100% Mourvèdre, as well as cuvées that open much earlier.
Wine Information
The 2017 Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is a blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. The vines are planted in an amphitheater facing the sea, planted on clay, limestone, and chalk from the Triassic period. Only the best and oldest vines are used for this Vin de Garde, located at an average altitude of 250 meters. Fermentation lasts around three weeks. The wines are then aged plot by plot in specially selected barriques, tonneaux, and foudres from various provenances for 20 months.
Colour
Deep violet-red with purple reflections.
Nose
The 2017 Château de Pibarnon Rouge is profound and intense, with dark blackberries, blackcurrants, prune, elderberry, and elderberry wood on the opening. This is followed by juniper, clove, truffle, and pepper, with aromas of vineyard peach and orange, as well as violet. Its brilliant and charming fragrance envelops the palate wonderfully, even on the nose.
Palate
Soft, full-bodied, and dense, it flows over the tongue. Its tannins are extremely fine and high-quality, its acidity invigorating, and its minerality cool, stony, and concise. A great classic made from the fantastic Mourvèdre grape, it has outstanding potential for ageing. Served from a carafe or after a day of opening, it can already serve as a congenial food accompaniment.
