Sebastian Bordthäuser: On the palate, the Cottá oscillates between inviting hospitality and youthful stubbornness, which quickly reveals itself as attitude. The taut, almost chewy tannins provide the Sottimano-typical bite and clothe the youthfully bright acidity in purple regalia. The overall concept combines vertical drinking with a gastronomically attractive drinking window.

Information about the wine

The Nebbiolo comes from the Cottá vineyard in Neive. The average yield is 15 hl/ha. Sottimano has been farming this vineyard organically since the 1970s. The fruit was destemmed and fermented for up to 60 days or left on the skins, with the pomace cap being regularly punched down during fermentation in open stainless steel fermenters. The wine has been matured in large, slightly conical botti since 2020. It aged in barrels for around 24 months.

Colour

: Quite transparent ruby red.

Nose

The 2020 “Cottá” reveals its youth in a certain restraint – in stark contrast to the “Basarin.” But that’s typical of “Cottá,” which always requires significantly more time. With plenty of air, it develops aromas of black and sour cherries, bitter almonds, a touch of rosehip and pomegranate, and even a hint of sloe and plum. Added to this are notes of black tobacco, earth and leaves, mocha, and iodine. In fact, it’s the only wine among the five Barbarescos that still has a slightly reductive aroma.

Palate

On the palate, it becomes even clearer that the “Cottá” is a long-distance runner that deserves plenty of time. What it does offer, however, is excellent: a firm, ripe, and present tannin structure combined with a lively, clear acidity. Added to this are dark berries, cherries, and sea buckthorn, a touch of salt, and a taste of forest and undergrowth.
