Product description for Sottimano Basarin, Barbaresco DOCG 2021
Sebastian Bordthäuser: Power meets finesse, or Bruce Lee instead of Schwarzenegger. The extract-rich fruit builds immense pressure on the palate, floating as if on a magic carpet of powerful and tightly woven tannins, accelerated by the vibrant acidity. Fleshy and firm, it is underpinned by the radiantly clear fruit and cool minerality, which lends it vibrancy and tension. Open-hearted and joyful, with a rapid drinking flow and a fruity, ethereal finish.
Info
Christoph Raffelt from February 14, 2023
The Nebbiolo comes from the Basarin vineyard in Neive. Sottimano only acquired the three hectares of the vineyard in 2014. The vines in the plot are around 50 years old. The average yield is 40 hl/ha. Sottimano immediately converted the vineyard to organic or biodynamic cultivation. The fruit was destemmed and fermented for up to 60 days or left on the skins, with the pomace cap being regularly punched down during fermentation in open stainless steel fermentation stands. The wine has been aged in large, slightly conical botti since 2020. It was aged in barrels for around 24 months.
Color
Brilliant cherry toffee with even color.
Nose
Sour cherry, cassis, elderberry, and raspberry initially characterize it. But it is also clear from the outset that the fruit is merely a vehicle. Its profound spiciness, its earthy character that reveals its origins, and its subtle complexity are the true factors. Juniper, black pepper, allspice, and cubeb pepper are prominent. Rosehip tea, cranberry, and dried fig add depth. Fine roasted aromas, cold smoke, and forest floor provide accents. Dried herbs from the spice cabinet, such as marjoram, tarragon, and savory, also play a role here.
Palate
For me, Basarin is always the most subtle of Andrea Sottimano’s wines. Nothing stands out loudly, nothing is intrusive. Its great balance is its strength. The structure of tannin, fruit, acidity, bitterness, and minerality seems perfect. The light fruit aromas interact wonderfully with the bitterness. Its tannin provides stability and prepares it for the future. It is juicy and enormously stimulating. The striking yet perfectly integrated acidity encourages drinking and stimulates saliva flow. Great elegance surrounds it, and this variety of impressions culminates in a silky mouthfeel. Juniper, allspice, and the dried herbs noticeably dominate the finish.
