Product description for Sangarida La Yegua 2021
Information about the wine
The Attis winery in the Galician Rias Baixas has founded the Sangarida wine project in the DO Bierzo in northern Spain. The white wine La Yegua 2021 is made from equal parts of the Godello and Doña Blanca grape varieties, two indigenous grapes from this Atlantic-influenced region. While Godello is now one of the most sought-after and well-known white wine varieties in Spain, Doña Blanca is only known to insiders. While it is not an overly primary-fruited grape, it can produce white wines with remarkable texture and structure. The Doña Blanca vines for this white wine are between 114 and 123 years old. This is typical of Bierzo: No other region in Europe has a larger population of old vines. The Godello grapes, in turn, come from two vineyards at 550 and 650 meters altitude. The Doña Blanca and Godello grapes are destemmed in the cellar and fermented together in used oak barrels. The 12-month aging on the fine lees also takes place in 228- and 500-liter oak barrels.

Nose
La Yegua has a wonderfully clear nose and invigorating aromas. The bouquet is characterized by citrus aromas, quince, and a stony minerality. Overall, the nose is super fresh and bright, clearly reflecting the wine’s Atlantic origins and the cool 2021 vintage.
Palate
On the palate, the 2021 La Yegua presents itself with pronounced acidity and plenty of grip. The altitude and the old vines result in a juicy, fresh, and structured white wine with excellent balance and plenty of personality. The profile is distinctly Atlantic: Fresh peach and citrus aromas and crisp acidity emerge. The elegant, silky texture, straightforward palate, and spicy finish offer pure drinking pleasure and flow. The wood is barely noticeable; it doesn’t overpower the wine, but rather contributes to its texture and complexity. This is an expressive and captivating white wine from Bierzo. Its high acidity, which distinguishes it, suggests a suitable food pairing.
