Product description for Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Teatro Riserva 2019 (bio)
In 1994, Francesco Leanza reclaimed the land now known as Podere Salicutti. He reclaimed the hillside and planted the vines around the winery, the heart of the estate. Salicutti’s estate encompasses a total of 11 hectares, spread across 4.5 hectares of vineyards, an olive grove, and forest. In 2015, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer took over the business and consistently pursue Leanza’s organic approach—with a critical and reflective eye on the influence of humans and agricultural techniques. Podere Salicutti is Montalcino’s first certified organic winery. The vines, planted in 1994, grow in soils that have never been exposed to conventional pesticides. Teatro is the smallest cru, covering just 0.7 hectares to the left of the winery. It opens like an amphitheater to the south and was planted in 1994. The soils are sandy and clayey, with a skeleton of very fine pebbles and large chunks of limestone and marl. Teatro has the comparatively coolest microclimate of the three sites and, at a good 500 meters above sea level, is also the highest. The wines from Teatro are always dark and profound.
Color
Dark, transparent ruby red.
Nose
The 2019 Teatro from Salicutti is more of a sketch than a fully mature wine. A promise for the future, when the combined ensemble of rich fruit, profound terroir impression, and careful aging reaches its full potential of a spectacular performance. Meanwhile, the fruit’s origins appear tightly bound, enveloped in a dark and almost smoky character; a touch of shoe polish and a delicate reduction envelop it like the finest wrapping paper, one that one is tempted to tear open immediately. But beware: This wine demands time—but in any case, patience and large glasses.
Palate
Contrary to the reticence of the nose, its structure reveals greatness on the first sip: powerful and taut, it has immense depth and inner density. The power doesn’t come from the muscular mass of a Schwarzenegger, but rather from the nimble and elegant qualities of Bruce Lee. The tannins are delicate and fine, yet firm and silky smooth. The ripe acidity radiates from within and accelerates the wine rapidly, prompting frequent refills. Meanwhile, a structural experience with cathedral-like qualities and an orchestral finish.
