Product description for Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Sorgente 2020 (bio)
In 1994, Francesco Leanza reclaimed the land now known as Podere Salicutti. He reclaimed the hillside and planted the vines around the winery, the heart of the estate. Salicutti’s estate encompasses a total of 11 hectares, spread across 4.5 hectares of vineyards, an olive grove, and forest. In 2015, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer took over the business and consistently pursue Leanza’s organic approach—with a critical and reflective eye on the influence of humans and agricultural techniques. Podere Salicutti is Montalcino’s first certified organic winery. Planted in 1994, the vines grow in soils that have never been exposed to conventional pesticides. The 1.5-hectare Cru Sorgente is located 450 meters behind the winery. It has heavy clay and sandy soils, as well as stony galestro soils, which always causes the grapes to ripen somewhat later. Situated above an underground water source, there is little hydraulic stress; the heavy soils produce fresh, multifaceted wines with comparatively low alcohol and a fine tannin structure. Sorgente’s delayed ripening is a clear advantage in light of global warming.
Color
Transparent ruby red.
Nose
The 2020 Sorgente from Salicutti opens on the nose with a huge basket of fully ripe cherries. Underpinned by mild spice notes, it is contoured by the scent of black cardamom, juniper, and bay leaves, along with roasted wood spice, a touch of smoke, sandalwood, and vetiver. Complex and multifaceted, the nose is in constant motion and therefore unmistakably calls for large glasses.
Palate
Super-juicy on the palate with crystal-clear cherry, the expansive and precise fruit is contoured by delicate tannins. Tightly woven, they appear almost powdery on the palate, aromatically reminiscent of dark chocolate, coffee crema, and light roasted notes. The stimulatingly ripe acidity shines in the background, fueling the insanely rapid drinking of this red wine. A super-hedonistic Brunello with rally stripes.
