Product description for Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Piaggione 2020 (bio)
In 1994, Francesco Leanza reclaimed the land now known as Podere Salicutti. He reclaimed the hillside and planted the vines around the winery, the heart of the estate. Salicutti’s estate encompasses a total of 11 hectares, spread across 4.5 hectares of vineyards, an olive grove, and forest. In 2015, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer took over the business and consistently pursue Leanza’s organic approach—with a critical and reflective eye on the influence of humans and agricultural techniques. Podere Salicutti is the first certified organic winery in Montalcino. Planted in 1994, the vines grow in soils that have never been exposed to conventional pesticides. The Cru Piaggione covers 1.2 hectares and lies at the foot of the cantina in an east-southeast-facing vineyard with skeletal limestone soils at an altitude of 420 to 450 meters. The vineyard is divided into two distinctly homogeneous plots by a terraced terrain and was planted in 1994 and 2007. The wines from Piaggione are comparable to a gloved hand.
Color
Intense, transparent ruby red.
Nose
The 2020 Piaggione from Salicutti has a powerful and generous aroma, offering a meaty, rich umami flavor: air-dried pork and mild spices such as black pepper and allspice provide the flavor, underscored by the radiant cherry of the Sangiovese Grosso. Black heart cherries, along with mulberries and blackberries, fill its fruit basket; dark chocolate and sandalwood shimmer in the overtones, while a touch of olive tapenade and shoe polish add a dark, aromatic and tart touch. A tightly packed power pack.
Palate
It is also powerful and full of character on the palate: with a meaty opening and a pronounced umami impression, it displays intense, slightly roasted aromas. The precisely structured, tightly knit tannin gives it its chewy texture – compact, dense, almost substantial with a meaty bite. Spicy notes of black cardamom and pepper provide aromatic tension, while dark hints of tobacco and leather underscore its depth. Despite its youth, it is surprisingly balanced, with a noticeable draw and inner tension on the palate. Large glasses are a must; those who give it time will be rewarded with multi-layered enjoyment.
