Product description for Saint Jean Du Barroux L’Argile AOC 2021 (bio)

blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault from high-altitude clay (argile) vineyards on Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail with a yield of 15 hl/ha. Hand-harvested, 75% destemmed, fermented for ten days, and aged for 24 months in concrete and enamel tanks. Philippe Gimel ages the wine for 15 years.

Colour

Purple red with a slightly brightening rim.

Nose

The 2021 L’Argile has a quintessential southern French aroma. It features garrigue, licorice, and Provençal herbs, some dry earth, but also warm forest soil, along with ripe dark fruit of blackberries, black cherries, and plums, a touch of sloe, fermented black cardamom, and a touch of sweet pipe tobacco.

Palate

On the palate, Syrah and Carignan are more present than Grenache. It’s a dark, fleshy wine with tannins, stony notes, undergrowth and smoked meat, violets, Assam, and a touch of iron. It possesses power and punch, with ripe, but above all powerful, structuring tannins and a deep minerality. A wine of the South, yet with a distinctly cool, polished feel.
