Product description for Roc des Anges Llum, Côtes Catalanes blanc IGP 2022 (bio)
Information
Llum, which means light in German, is a cuvée of Grenache gris and Grenache blanc from vines up to 100 years old, as well as smaller portions of Macabeu, Carignan gris, Carignan blanc, and Malvoisie. These varieties grow in the Piedmont Pyrénéen Oriental region, partly on slate soil, ochre clay, and limestone in the terraces of the Agly River. They were spontaneously fermented and aged in used barriques and tonneaux. Llum is a wine that lives up to its name. If you travel through the south of France, you will find any number of white wines that are rather ponderous, dense, powerful, and heavy. Not so with Marjorie Gallet. She creates Burgundies in Roussillon, using southern French varieties. In the past, Llum only used Grenache gris and Macabeu, but today a few more varieties have been added. It is the house’s white estate wine.
Colour
Rich straw yellow with a slightly reddish tinge, almost like Blanc de Noirs.
Nose
Llum’s aroma already delivers freshness and vibrancy, but also elegance and finesse. It smells of ripe yellow blossoms and freshly whipped lemon curd, as well as some ripe pineapple, pear, and a very subtle hint of wood. It’s hard to believe that this wine comes from the Deep South.
Palate
The creaminess of the lemon curd can also be found on the palate. There are citrus notes and creaminess, and again a little pear and wood. But everything swirls together, defined by freshness and clarity, as well as the nerve and very special fruit acidity of almost green pineapple. Then, however, there is a fine spiciness that really brings to mind the South for the first time when you hold the wine in your glass. The Llum offers a highly elegant and refined mouthfeel, accompanied by a clear, lively minerality. The wood used provides a very subtle aromatic quality that further underlines the wine’s elegance.
