Product description for Roc des Anges 1903 Carignan, Côtes Catalanes rouge IGP 2022 (bio)
Information about the wine
This wine comes from a 3.5-hectare Carignan vineyard planted in 1903 on slate soils and slate that has weathered into clay in the Eastern Pyrenees. The grapes come from the Sainte-Eugénie, La Ginèvre, and Las Trabassères plots. The wine was aged in used tonneaux and foudres for nine months.
Colour
Deep ruby red with violet reflections
Nose
The theme of this wine can be found in the nose: the balance between coolness and warmth, or to put it another way: a fresh, cool and stony aspect in the otherwise fully ripe, dark fruit of the Carignan 1903. However, the fruit of currants, blueberries, and cherries gives way to other notes as the air increases: one finds leather, tobacco, smoke and garigue, mint, and a hint of dark chocolate. With even more air, candied figs and plums appear.
Palate
This wine from vines more than a hundred years old, whose few small remaining grapes produce a concentrated juice, should definitely be decanted and poured into a Burgundy glass. Only with sufficient air does the fascinating interplay emerge: ripe blackberry and cassis fruit, wild strawberries, and cherries, with the many spicy and herbal notes that can all be found in the Roussillon landscape, as well as the cool stoniness, a hint of iron, and the minerality that old vines can produce. This wine is not impressive in its opulence, but rather in its minerally vibrant, cool, stony, and herbal character, in which the fine tannins harmonize with the juicy fruit right up to the long finish. This is Carignan with rare finesse and perfectly ripe tannins, tactilely elegant with a light extract sweetness and the finest grain. In my opinion, Marjorie Gallet produces the most Burgundian wines of Roussillon, and with the 1903, one of the finest Carignans I know.
