Alfredo Arribas describes Lo Noir as his dream of seeking absolute finesse without sacrificing intensity. And intensity is rarely a problem in this region. The name partly says it all. Grenache Noir is a very typical grape variety here, but Pinot Noir is a dying breed in this environment. The vines are planted on chalky soil at an altitude of 500 meters. Fermentation takes place with wild yeasts both in steel tanks and in large 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels. Small batches are fermented separately but then blended very early to better integrate these two worlds. The wine then matures in these oak barrels for 12 months.

Colour

Rich, bright cherry red, with delicate violet reflections

Nose

Lo Noir appears incredibly dark. At the same time, it is characterized by a distinct reduction that makes it appear lean and racy. This pleasant, wild “stinker” evaporates after a few minutes in the glass. It would be advisable to “drop decant” to accelerate this process. Then, behind it, it reveals its beauty: pure sour cherry. Juicy. Crisp. Beguiling. A touch of sloe and elderberry join in. This slightly almondy nuance suits it wonderfully. Juniper, rosemary, and pine branches provide an enormous ethereal component. This conveys cool finesse and ample contrast.

Palate

With the first sip, it presents much more than the nose initially suggests. It is certainly rather lean in nature, thrives on finesse, and is more of a purist. Its silkiness conveys enormous elegance. Fine tannins are wonderfully evident and build vigorously alongside the fruit. Its reductive nature also comes across very successfully on the palate. The fruit is rather restrained. Its spicy elements steal the show. Abundant ethereal notes and associations of undergrowth, cigar box, and pepper characterize the finish.
