Product description for Pian Dell’Orino Piandorino Toskana IGT 2021
Wine Information
Tasting note by Sebastian Bordthäuser from February 22, 2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser. The Piandorino is the entry-level wine from Pian del’Orino. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the grapes come from young vineyards, experimental vineyards, or cooler sites of calcareous clay, weathered marl, blue-gray Pliocene limestone, as well as Alberese and flysch soils, and have a southeasterly exposure. The grapes from the Moro, Cancello Rosso, and Pian Bassolino vineyards thrived at elevations between 320 and 480 meters above sea level; the vines were between 7 and 13 years old at the time of harvest. After meticulous sorting by hand-picking in the vineyard, grape reception, and at the sorting table, the grapes are spontaneously fermented. This year, they remained on the skins for 18 days and then matured for 17 months in 15-hectoliter barrels.
Colour
Muted garnet red with violet reflections towards the rim.
Nose
The 2021 Piandorino exudes a charming and beguiling nose with its intense fruit of cassis, dark berries, and sweet cherries, seducing the senses. Behind this lies a precise mineral and fresh component that seems invigorating. Even on the nose, it displays wonderful depth and invites you to taste it.
Palate
On the tongue, it presents itself juicy with sweet fruit, a refreshing acidity, and a fine-grained tannin structure. It coats the palate wonderfully and is simultaneously incredibly stimulating and invigorating. A highly successful entry into the top range from Caroline Pobitzer and Jan-Hendrik Erbacher. An uncomplicated wine that pairs perfectly with traditional Italian cuisine.

With 3,332 bottles produced, the Pian dell’Orino 2021 Piandorino has warm-vintage aromas of ripe fruit, cherry cough drop and grilled herb. There was a severe frost event in April 2021, and vintner Jan Hendrik Erbach worried that ripening would be uneven, leaving some clusters behind the others. He was also concerned that he may have harvested too soon. (In fact, his top-tier Bassolino grapes went to the Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante instead.) The month of August had hail and rain, and mildew pressure was a concern that luckily did not materialize. This estate works with wholes berries. “We want clean berries that you can pop in your mouth,” says co-owner Caroline Pobitzer.
