Product description for Pian Dell’Orino Piandorino Toskana IGT 2020
Info
Tasting note by Sebastian Bordthäuser from February 22, 2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser. The Piandorino is the entry-level wine from Pian del’Orino. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the grapes come from young vineyards, experimental vineyards, or cooler sites of calcareous clay, weathered marl, blue-gray Pliocene limestone, and Alberese and flysch soils, and have a southeasterly exposure. The grapes from the Moro, Cancello Rosso, and Pian Bassolino vineyards thrived at elevations between 320 and 480 meters above sea level; the vines were between 7 and 13 years old at the time of harvest. After meticulous sorting by hand-picking in the vineyard, grape reception, and at the sorting table, the grapes are fermented spontaneously. This year, they remained on the skins for 18 days and then matured for 17 months in 15-hectoliter barrels.
Colour
Dark cherry red, with a dense center and bright reflections towards the outside.
Nose
The 2020 Piandorino impresses with its dark fruit and spice in equal measure. Plum and elderberry are generously portioned, paired with some cassis and raspberry. Rosemary and sage contribute a subtle spiciness, while undergrowth and resinous tree bark impart an earthy and ethereal character. Pine groves and the scent of cypress complement all of this extremely well, pushing it clearly into the Mediterranean corner. A gentle breeze of black pepper lends it the final spicy aroma.
Palate
Dark and sublime, it flows across the palate. Floral and elegant, without losing its spice and earthiness. It has a silky, almost smooth appearance. This lends it finesse and elegance. The Sangiovese leaves its mark with the finest tannins and a gripping acidity structure. It coats the palate, but always encourages the next sip. Fruit, racy, and elegance are closely intertwined. The fruit almost dries out on the palate, leaving ample room for the spicy and earthy aromas that dominate the finish.

Wine Advocate
Score: 92
The entry-level Pian dell’Orino 2020 Piandorino is a generously fleshed out and immediate expression of Sangiovese. It shows blackberry, light spice and sweet earth. The 2020 growing season did not see much rain in the winter months, although rain did come in May and June during flowering (with no significant damage). The season progressed with heat spikes in July and strong UV rays from the summer sun. These helped to shape tannins and phenols that give this wine more richness and dark fruit flavors.

Score: 91
Vibrant bright cherry, sweet rose and autumnal spices burst up from the 2020 Piandorino. This is zesty to the core with juicy acidity that enlivens its tart red berries and a subtle note of citrus that adds a pleasant sour twang. It’s potent and long with a gentle tug of framing tannin, making for wonderful punctuation. Wow, there’s so much energy here.
