Wine Information
The Grand Cru “Les Bressandes” vineyard lies exactly in the middle of the Corton hill below the Clos du Roi and Les Renardes. The 1.12 hectares are divided into four plots, and the soil is characterized by Bajocian and Oxford limestone with pebbles, clay, and a high iron content. In 2014, after the devastating hailstorm of 2013, François de Nicolay had to deal with hail again, albeit with significantly less intensity. Instead, the spotted wing drosophila (WDR), similar to what happened in German vineyards, caused crop failures. Despite the adversity, however, the 2014 vintage turned out to be a beautiful, fruit-forward vintage. The Corton-Bressandes comes from vines that are on average 35 years old, was picked between September 18 and 26, and meticulously sorted. The wine was fermented with 40 to 50% whole bunches.
Colour
Medium, but intense cherry red
Nose
Initially, the nose of the Corton-Bressandes is strongly characterized by reduction. Although Pinot Noir is not usually decanted, it should be considered given this wine’s still extremely youthful stage. Then a wide field of intense blackcurrant and cherry fruit, elderberry and chestnut, orange peel, juniper, and undergrowth opens up. In the distance, one seems to detect notes of iron—imagine or not.
Palate
On the palate, the Corton already demonstrates the full power of this unique Grand Cru site. Silky and fine in texture, with a clear and brilliant acidity, the dark fruit, interspersed with notes of forest floor and undergrowth, is present and full of power. The Corton-Bressandes is permeated by a nervy, agile freshness and minerality that plays a significant role in the tightly woven structure of this wine. Anyone who classifies Corton as “strict and masculine” will be disabused of this notion. The wine also demonstrates the gentler side that Corton can have. For all the youthfulness that the Pinot Noir still possesses, one can undoubtedly already sense its impressive grandeur. The wine currently needs at least one day of air.
