Product description for Peter Jakob Kühn Riesling Oestricher Klosterberg 1G Erste Lage 2022 (bio)
Information about the Wine
The name Oestricher Klosterberg derives from the vineyard’s affiliation with the former Cistercian monastery of Gottesthal. The soil is characterized by calcareous loess with terraced sediments, clay marl, and quartz pebbles. The vineyard is situated at an elevation of 160 meters with a slope of approximately 15 to 20% and faces south-southwest. After hand-picking, gentle whole-bunch pressing over several hours, and spontaneous fermentation, the Riesling was aged for 16 months on the full lees in traditional double-barrel barrels (2,440 l).
Colour
Intense straw yellow
Nose
The Klosterberg has a slightly reductive aroma of smoke, a hint of lemon and zest, elderberry, and crisp stone fruit combined with a subtle acidity, a touch of iodine, and a hint of petrol.
Palate
On the palate, the wine appears fresh, silky, and juicy with a fine, not so pronounced, but still clear and distinctive acidity in the background. The alternating emphasis of slightly reductive and slightly oxidative aspects, as is often found in the Jura and also here, as well as the oscillation between a creamy texture and acidity, make the Klosterberg particularly exciting. Especially since the wine finishes very precise, salty, and long.

Score: 91
Coming from a very dry and warm vintage, the 2022 Oestricher Klosterberg Riesling trocken 1G opens with an intense and elegant, also finely saline or mineral nose of super ripe and stewed (red berry) fruit aromas that indicate a certain bottle age already. The wine is refined and elegant on the palate, well structured and saline and provided with crystalline, stunningly pronounced acidity for the vintage and refreshing lemon flavors, that give a lean, fine and fresh expression. This is an excellent, light, dry and linear, mineral Riesling from Oestrich. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025.
