Description

Product description for Peter Jakob Kühn Riesling Lenchen Beerenauslese 2018 (bio)

Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the Beerenauslese is floatingly light yet full of substance. The rich, ripe, yellow fruit is countered by tart citrus aromas and fine acidity. A slight saltiness gives this wine a mouthwatering effect. Creamy, the Beerenauslese from the Lendchen glides over the tongue, coating the entire mouth, and even after drinking the Riesling a long time ago, it lingers on the palate for minutes.

Wine Information

The so-called Le(h)ne of the Pfingstbach stream once gave the Oestrich vineyard its name. The vineyard is defined by clayey loess with iron oxide-rich quartzite veins, which is why it was formerly called Eiserberg. The early morning mists from the flowing stream at the foot of the vineyard always ensured early morning mists. This now spreads botrytis, which is why this site primarily produces noble sweet Rieslings. The wine has 238.8 grams of residual sugar and 8.1 grams of acidity. The wine was matured in stainless steel.

Nose

The Oestricher Lenchen gave the Kühns wonderful residual sweet and noble sweet wines in 2018. The Beerenauslese opens with a potpourri of diverse aromas. The opening notes are kumquats and grapefruit with a hint of smoke, botrytis, pineapple, quince, and plenty of ripe stone fruit, which combine with a very fine, quickly evaporating musk note.

Palate

On the palate, the Beerenauslese is floatingly light, yet full of substance. The rich, ripe, yellow fruit is countered by tart citrus aromas and fine acidity. A slight saltiness gives this wine a mouthwatering effect. The Beerenauslese from the Lendchen winery glides creamily over the tongue, coating the entire mouth, and even after drinking the Riesling for several minutes, it lingers on the palate.

Wine Advocate

Score: 94

Kühn’s 2018 Lenchen Riesling Beerenauslese is highly concentrated and flinty on the nose, with perfect raisin aromas and notes of crushed stones and quartzite. Reductive, yes, but in an attractive way. The palate is sweet, generous and lush but also very fine and flinty, with vibrant mineral tension and lingering as well as stimulating salinity. This is a fabulous sweet wine made from 75% botrytis grapes. Tasted in May 2019.

Vinous

Score: 92

This wine’s remarkably pale, green-gold hue points to the cleanest possible sort of noble rot having informed the largely shriveled raw material. But sheer viscosity highlights a major jump in concentration vis-à-vis the corresponding Auslese, while the brightness and sheer juiciness of that wine are left behind. Glazed pineapple, candied lemon peel, dried quince and mirabelle dominate the nose and the creamy, glycerol-slicked palate. The finish is impressively sustained, though, for now at least, dominated by its sheer sweetness. There were a generous 600 liters of this. “Give it ten years,” said Kühn. I concur.
