Product description for Peter Jakob Kühn Hallgartener Frühernberg VDP Erste Lage 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
The vines for Spätburgunder 1G grow on slightly lighter, gravelly soils with fluvial and maritime sediments in the Hallgartener Schönhell vineyard, part of the Frühenberg area. It is an amphitheater-shaped ridge that opens to the south. The vines are the Selection Massale of a winegrower friend from Burgundy, planted in 2006. After hand-harvesting, 75% were destemmed by hand, and spontaneous fermentation was carried out with 25% whole bunches. Fermentation was carried out to 1.9 grams of residual sugar, 5.7 grams of acidity, and 13% ABV. The wine was aged for 12 months in barriques with 50% new oak.
Colour
Slightly transparent ruby red
Nose
Aromatically, the Frühenberg is a clear step above the Pinot Noir, even though the latter is already really good. The Erste Gewächs appears elegant and intense with plenty of cherry and wild berries, a touch of cinnamon and clove, the finest wood along with a fine, roasted and smoky note, a hint of iodine and violet. It already appears very fine and attractive.
Palate
On the palate, the Pinot Noir, which is actually a Pinot Noir, is silky and charming, deep and elegant with delicious fruit of cherries and blue fruits at the beginning of their ripeness. The wood is first-class, the tannins delicate but present with consummate nobility and piquancy, generosity and length with clear precision and a thoroughly taut acidity. An excellent Rheingau Pinot Noir.

The 2022 Hallgartener Frühernberg Spätburgunder 1G opens with an intense and very elegant, polished yet still finely toasty bouquet of dark and bright red fruits (wild strawberries) intermingled with floral aromas and delicate stony, even iodine notes. Silky, very fine and juicy on the palate, this silky-textured and tart-finishing Pinot is still a little austere at this stage, although its tannins are delicate and silky, whereas the fruit is perfectly ripe and clear yet less fleshy or hedonistic than the stunning estate Spätburgunder from the same site and the Klosterberg. This has remarkable noblesse and elegance and a fine, energetic and stimulating refreshing finish. It’s still tart but with a sweet generosity in the aftertaste. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.
