Wine Information

100% Nebbiolo from Starderi, the northernmost municipality of Neive. This is a small plot of 40-year-old vines that Olek was able to lease from an elderly couple who could no longer cultivate the steep slopes. The soils in Starderi are somewhat softer, more clayey, less marly, and less exposed than elsewhere in the region. Fermentation took place in concrete with two months of contact with the skins and submerged pomace caps. The wine was then gently pressed in a basket press and transferred to large vats for at least two years. Finally, the Barbaresco was bottled unfiltered and unfined with a total sulphur content of approximately 40 mg.

Transparent ruby red

Nose

This Barbaresco initially recalls dried flowers and herbs. This is followed by black cherries, earth, forest floor, a touch of licorice and fermented cardamom, some black tea, dry undergrowth, and quite dark tobacco. All of this seems finely interwoven, not expressive, but elegant and yet haunting.

Palate

On the palate, the Starderi presents itself very juicy and silky with fine tannins. The presence and balance on the palate are outstanding. The Nebbiolo is as transparent as its colour suggests. There is a good portion of crystal-clear, bright acidity, plenty of dark, but also red, partly dried berry fruit, and a very harmonious structure and concentration. You’d want to drink this Barbaresco right now. And that’s despite the fact that it seems more classic than modern and is actually still very young.
