Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Weisser Burgunder “Im Sonnenschein” GG 2022 (bio)
Information about the site
While most of the vineyards along the Haardt edge, the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest, were formed as east-facing slopes by the Rhine Graben, which runs from south to north, there are also south-facing slopes in the Queichtal valley, which leads from the Palatinate Forest into the Rhine Valley. This “Siebeldinger Sommerseite” (Siebeldinger Summer Side) has the site designation “Im Sonnenschein” (In Sunshine). The vineyards lie 160 to 225 m above sea level and have a slope gradient of 5 to 20%. The old names of the vineyards, “Am Berg,” “Auf’m Berg,” and “Stockwingert” (from limestone stock), describe the winery’s parcels very well. Located at the highest point of the site, these parcels are the most barren and rockiest in the area. This wine comes from parcels with vines up to 40 years old, located at 185 and 225 m above sea level on the south and southwest slopes. Due to the subsidence and faults of the Rhine Graben and the significant uplift of the Palatinate Forest, very old and deep-lying geological formations are exposed in the area around Siebeldingen. The soils in the “Im Sonnenschein” vineyard are therefore very diverse. The Rebholz winery’s parcel contains shell limestone soil, which was formed in the Triassic period 220 million years ago. The limestones are marine sediments in which fossils of marine flora and fauna are repeatedly found. Limestone soil is a prerequisite for all of the world’s great Burgundy and Pinot Noirs!
Information on Vinification
After a selective hand-picking, the grapes were destemmed and, after a 24-hour maceration period, gently juiced using a basket press. After a 24-hour sedimentation of the must lees, fermentation followed in stainless steel tanks. After 5 months of aging on the full lees, racking followed in March 2023 and bottling in July 2023.
Colour
Light, sparkling golden yellow with delicate green reflections.
Nose
The 2022 Weißer Burgunder im Sonnenschein GG still presents a youthful appearance at the moment, but already flirts with plenty of bright fruit reminiscent of pear, yellow apple, and quince. Clear floral hints of acacia and elderflower give it a stimulating note; after a longer opening, aromas of minerality and the seductive scent of freshly baked brioche, light tobacco, and wood smoke emerge.
Palate
On the palate, it is very charming at first, with a fine melt and creamy structure. The refreshing acidity, which is perfectly integrated into the smoothness and delicate fruit sweetness of the wine, lends it a stimulating structure. Its acidity underscores the excellent aging potential of this exciting Pinot Blanc. Spicy notes on the finish whet the appetite for fine cuisine, and further aging will enhance it even further. If you want to enjoy it at this youthful stage, it’s definitely worth opening and decanting early.
